Best Restaurants on the Solent28th June 2017
From the freshest seafood in the UK to homebrewed wines and beers, there’s a lot to recommend the Isle of Wight and beaches around the Solent for their culinary excellence. This month, No Stress Charters are offering their favourite eateries to complement a luxury sailing yacht voyage.
Lockslane Contemporary Bistro
9 Foreland Rd, Bembridge PO35 5XW
They’re a favourite with local islanders and boast the distinction of appearing on The Hairy Bikers’ Best of British. Lockslane Contemporary Bistro are situated in the coastal town of Bembridge and are famous for a no nonsense approach to imaginative food. Their website even notes:
We never use the term ‘home-made’ on the menu because everything is, right down to the bread.
Is there a better caveat for fine dining? The menu changes regularly and has in the past included such oddities as ‘fragrant broth of lemongrass, ginger, coriander and chilli with interesting mushrooms’. Whatever the order, you’re guaranteed it’s all prepared to perfection by hand, or otherwise sourced locally. If you order fish, chances are it was caught not far away, in the waters of the Wight.
The Red Duster
37 High St, Cowes PO31 7RS
Tucked away on the narrow, medieval High Street of Cowes is this new, but highly regarded tavern-turned-restaurant. Like any self-respecting island restaurant, there are plenty of seafood dishes on offer alongside other meats and vegetarian options. Look further into the menu and you’ll notice a penchant for Marmite-based side dishes which – love it or hate it – makes the place somewhat endearing. Book a table quick because their cosy upstairs saloon fills up fast.
The Priory Bay
Priory Dr, Seaview PO34 5BU
The Priory Bay Hotel boasts every luxury you could possibly desire in a country house getaway – rooms of royal standard, swimming pools, parlours, games grounds and even yurts. If you can’t stay over, however, you can at least enjoy their prestigious restaurant. Local seafood paired with locally produced wines and beers were enough to make Rick Stein declare his love for the Priory’s dishes in his Seafood Lover’s Guide. If you can’t make it for an extravagant evening meal, why not stop by for a lavish afternoon tea instead?
27A South Parade, Southsea, Portsmouth PO5 2JF
Situated near the marina where No Stress Charters keep our Princess V45 yacht, Restuarant 27 is Portsmouth’s only eatery with two AA Rosettes and a Michelin Guide 2017 recommendation. Simply catch the Gosport Ferry across to Old Portsmouth and get a taxi to the restaurant in Southsea for brilliantly innovative set menus at surprisingly good value.
