First-Time Charter Tips22nd January 2017
Getting out onto the water and enjoying a day (or three) in the comfort of a luxury charter yacht is an unforgettable experience, but organising a charter can seem like a daunting prospect.
It helps to be prepared, so we thought it would be handy to put together some first-time charter tips to help you make the most of your charter adventure from initial enquiries and planning, to setting sail and beyond.
Book your charter early
If you have a firm idea of when you’d like to embark on your trip then don’t delay! Waiting for too long will more often than not result in you missing out on your preferred dates, which will only bring disappointment. Yacht charters are popular, particularly in the summertime, so try to beat the rush by booking your charter as early as possible.
If you’re undecided on a date, but are firmly interested in chartering a yacht, it never hurts to call up a charter company and enquire about availability and to discuss your potential plans. Talking about the idea with someone of experience will allow you to clear up any issues or uncertainties you might have, and will give you a clearer idea of your plans in general.
Talk to your charter company
Following on from the last point, once your charter has been booked a crucial part of the planning process is communication with the charter company. They will be on hand to help with any questions or clarifications, and are an indispensable tool for any first-time charter.
In the lead-up to your charter date, keep in touch with the company and ask for any advice you might need. They will be considerate of first-time sailors and will do their best to offer up any tips or give you insight into how a crewed charter works; including the operation of the crew, specific safety concerns, what you should and shouldn’t bring with you, and much more.
Be attentive and respectful
Whether it’s a family trip, corporate gathering or a group of friends looking for luxurious fun, charter guests should listen to the crew and act respectfully throughout the charter period. First-time charterers may not know exactly what to expect from a yacht charter, and your captain will be sure to brief you when you first step aboard, but a good general rule to follow is to avoid disruptive or aggressive behaviour while on board.
A yacht charter should be a fun and friendly experience, so for a first-time charter it will help to discuss behaviour guidelines in advance and communicate these to your group, to ensure that everyone enters the charter on the same level.
Don’t be afraid to interact with your crew
The presence of a crew, even a small one, can be a strange adjustment for some. The thing to keep in mind here is that the crew are here to help! They will have their own jobs and tasks to get on with throughout the charter, but they will provide as much help as they can if you require it. The captain will be able to help you with an itinerary, and taking advantage of the crew’s knowledge and insight of the route, destination and boat itself can enrich any charter.
You’re not forced to devote all your time to the crew – they will be fine on their own! – but a healthy, friendly relationship will likely make your charter even more enjoyable. And remember, if you have any questions about the boat, aspects you don’t quite understand, or anything else, simply ask a crew member and they will assist you in any way possible.
First-time charterers might be overwhelmed by the whole experience, but, while some form of adjustment is necessary, remember to have fun once you’ve found your sea legs. Your charter journey is catered around you, so try to make the most of it for the duration!
