Round the Island Race: the Sailing Event of the Summer17th May 2017
On Saturday 1st July 2017, the Isle of Wight will host the 80th Round the Island Race with over 1700 boats expected to take part. It has been a highlight of the racing calendar since 1931, and you can expect an entire weekend of festival atmosphere, shoreside parties and world class sailing action. So what makes the Round the Island Race so special? I’m glad you asked.
Here’s why you should be making a trip to the Isle of Wight on 1st July.
Only at the Isle of Wight Round the Island Race will you see olympic gold medalists battle it out alongside weekend sailors and junior racers. No matter what skill level a sailor has achieved, they will have their chance to win the 50 nautical mile race.
As well as pros and ambitious amateurs, the race’s official charity, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, have entered 28 rookie sailors in 4 yachts, who will be building confidence and skills with every tack and jibe.
With every class of sailor comes every class of boat. Vintage yachts race alongside modern folkboats, which in turn look humble next to the ultimate in sailing technology, namely, the multi-hull yachts that are capable of record breaking speeds. Sails can be seen from the shore to the horizon and the sights are sure to take your breath away – especially if you are spectating from the sea in a luxury yacht charter.
A Full Day of Racing
The sun rises early for the Round the Island Race and competitors get underway immediately. Wake up early and be ready for 5:30 am (it’s worth it) and grab yourself a picnic breakfast. Head to the startline for a close up view of the boats, then travel further afield to get a sense of the race’s high stakes. The Needles make for a dramatic scene as hundreds of boats navigate the tricky, and occasionally treacherous, obstacles.
If family, friends or colleagues are part of the race, you can use the online boat tracking facility to keep you up to date on how your boat and crew are doing! To be part of the action, consider the race as the perfect time to begin your yacht charter experience, with a skipper and mate to attend to your every need, and 750 horsepower to cruise around the Isle, you won’t miss a thing.
